Atletico Madrid prepare a transfer for Napoli forward in the summer

Atletico Madrid are set to be in the transfer market for a forward in the summer and have now been associated with signing a Napoli star.

Atletico Madrid won La Liga last season but in doing so, they nearly gave up a lead of over 10 points. Diego Simeone’s men sealed the championship on the final day of the season and clinched the title ahead of Real Madrid by just one point, despite a sizeable advantage earlier on. One of the main reasons was their overreliance on Luis Suarez.

In 32 appearances in the Spanish top-flight, the former Barcelona marksman notched 21 goals and assisted thrice. His numbers were extremely crucial in winning Atletico Madrid the title, but there was a visible discord in the attacking unit during his absence. Joao Felix continued to struggle for a second successive season, as did Moussa Dembele and  Vitolo.

Mundo Deportivo reports that the Rojiblancos will now turn to the transfer market in a bid to overcome their goal-scoring problems. Napoli’s Lorenzo Insigne has been identified as a potential signing for the summer. Having effectively locked in on Rodrigo de Paul, the La Liga champions are now set to negotiate for another signing from the Italian top-flight.

While the key details such as the transfer fee and willingness of the player to move to the Spanish capital have not yet been obtained, Insigne promises to be a superb signing. The Italian struck 19 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions in the recently concluded campaign. Despite his numbers, Napoli were unable to qualify for the Champions League.

Considering that Vitolo may leave the club in search of regular minutes this summer, a player of Insigne’s profile may be the perfect candidate to arrive at the Wanda Metropolitano. Having said that, Insigne is a second striker who plays slightly behind the primary forward, which means that he will be perfectly compatible with Suarez.

Insigne is also a good performer in the Champions League, a competition which Atletico Madrid have craved to win in recent years. The 30-year-old has scored against the likes of Barcelona, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain in the competition whereas Suarez did not even score or assist once in six appearances in the European Cup last season.

Finally, Insigne’s commendable numbers will also provide Atletico with two regular scoring options in their offensive department. Simeone’s sides have been defensively brilliant but the Argentinian manager has always had to deal with a lack of goal-scorers in his squad. Their newest target will surely help in that regard.

Do you think the Madrid-based giants will be able to defend their league crown next season?
