Atletico Madrid are frontrunners in the race to sign one of Serie A’s most in-form midfielders at the end of the 2020/21 season.
Atletico Madrid are just two wins away from winning La Liga for the first time since 2014. The title race in Spain is set to go till the final matchday in all likelihood despite the fact that the Rojiblancos held a 13 point lead in December. Diego Simeone will be concerned by his side’s inconsistent form and will look to invest in a few players in the transfer market.
Calcio Mercato has claimed that one of the players on El Cholo’s wish-list is Rodrigo De Paul. The Udinese midfielder has assisted and scored nine times each in the Serie A so far this season and has attracted interest from not just Spain, but also from other Italian clubs including AC Milan and Napoli. Liverpool are an interested party too.
However, Atletico Madrid are thought to be a step ahead of the rest and have agreed personal terms with the 26-year-old. The Argentine’s preference towards the Spanish top-flight comes as a result of the possibility to unite with his compatriot, Simeone. Plus, he already knows the nuts and bolts of La Liga having previously played for Valencia.
De Paul’s signing for Atletico Madrid is certainly one that will further boost their chances of winning silverware in the near future. The club has continued to struggle to challenge for multiple trophies in one season due to its lack of squad depth, but that seems to have been a lesson learnt now and since last summer, things have changed.
Marcos Llorente has been used as a makeshift attacking midfielder and winger to good avail by Simeone, but at the cost of the defensive aspect of things. De Paul’s arrival will mitigate the risk of compromising defensive mistakes, by adding further cushion to the backline. His price tag is also one which Atletico Madrid can easily afford, more so if they win the league.
Udinese value the player at 50 million euros, but there is optimism within the Atletico camp that they can negotiate his asking price to 40 million euros. The Colchoneros are keen on closing out De Paul’s signing as soon as the season ends, so he will be available to them for pre-season in July once his participation in the Copa America with Argentina ends.
Which other players do you think Atletico Madrid must bring in during the summer?
