Arsenal identify a key player from RB Leipzig to solve their defensive woes for next season. Can the Gunners sign the highly-rated defender?

Arsenal have had no shortage of problems this season. The north-London side have struggled majorly with putting up results, and have not been in form since the starting of the season. After ending the 2019-2020 season on a positive note, winning the FA Cup and the Community Shield, a lot was expected of the Gunners. In the following summer, manager Mikel Arteta made a few transfers and went into the 2020-2021 season as easy top four contenders.

However, none of the transfers has really paid off with Willian hardly putting up impressive performances and with Thomas Partey not playing up to his standard. Coupled with the out of form players, the defence of the side has been shambolic and has been the leading reason as to why the side has been losing so many games. Constant mistakes in the backline have led to several match losses, and it is a department the Spaniard coach would be looking to fix for the 2021-2022 season.

According to Standard, Arteta has recently shown interest in the purchase of RB Leipzig’s Ibrahim Konate. With David Luiz running out of his contract this summer and Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos being put up on the transfer list, the Spaniard plans on rebuilding the club in the next few seasons, and the transfer of Konate is likely to be the first step taken in the direction of the renovation.

The 21-year-old has attracted suitors for himself from all around Europe. The performances put up by the youngster for the German side have been commendable, he also boasts great physical ability and makes good defensive decisions. Being of such a young age, the player also has plenty of time to grow and would be a smart investment for Arsenal, especially for the future. The Frenchman would also make a great partner currently with Gabriel Meghales.

The immediate addition of the young RB Leipzig player is likely to improve Arsenal’s defence marginally, and also has the potential to be one of the best in the league as he has the physical qualities that make a great defender. Although nothing has been finalised as of yet, a move to the Premier League seems highly likely for Konate, and it will be seen as to whether Arteta would sea a deal for the Frenchman.
