Arsenal reignite their interest in signing Barcelona star next summer

Arsenal reignite their interest in signing a Barcelona star next summer as part of their squad revamp.

In the summer of 2020, Arsenal were linked with Barcelona’s goalkeeper Neto as a backup to Bernd Leno following the sale of Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa. The 31-year-old was eager on signing for the Gunners in a bid to receive more game time but the negotiations fell through.

Mundo Deportivo claims that the north London side have once again added the Brazilian goalkeeper to their shortlist and will pursue him in the coming transfer window. Neto is on contract with Barca until the summer of 2023 and is currently valued at a mere amount of 10 million euros making him an affordable signing for Arsenal.

The Brazilian has made 11 appearances so far this season in all competitions mainly due to the absence of Marc-Andre ter Stegen who was recovering from an injury at the start of the season. In his 11 appearances, the goalkeeper has conceded eight goals while keeping a clean sheet on only three occasions.

The 31-year-old last played in January in the Copa del Rey and since then has been out of action. However, he will be returning in between the sticks for Barcelona’s final league fixture against Eibar as Marc-Andre ter Stegen is set to undergo a second knee surgery in as many years. The away fixture at Eibar is most likely going to be Neto’s final game as a Barca player since signing in 2019.

At Arsenal, it is unlikely that Neto would receive a significant amount of game time when compared to his stint at Camp Nou. However, at the Emirates Stadium, the Brazilian has more chances of starting ahead of Bernd Leno when compared to the chances he had at starting ahead of Marc-Andre ter Stegen. In addition to that, there are two cup competitions in England, which provide for a greater amount of squad rotation than there exists in Spain.

Neto will certainly be an upgrade over both Runnar Alex Runarsson and Matt Ryan as a backup goalkeeper for next season and will not cost Arsenal an arm and a leg.
