Arsenal are willing to sign one of the main Manchester United targets as the Gunners look to improve their defence.
Arsenal have made a decent start to their Premier League campaign this season as Mikel Arteta‘s side have picked up nine points in their first five matches. The Gunners although have dropped points in two games as they succumbed to defeats against Manchester City and Liverpool.
The North London club did a commendable job in the recent transfer window as the club was able to bring in a fair number of reinforcements this summer. The likes of Gabriel Magalhaes, Willian and Runar Alex Runnarson were brought in as new additions to the Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners also went on a sign one of their high priority targets as the English club pulled off a coup on the deadline day to land Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid. Mikel Arteta’s side had triggered the release clause of the Ghanaian international and faced a race against time on deadline day to finish formalities.
However, there has been one glaring issue in the present Arsenal squad which is the absence of quality centre-backs as the performance of their central defenders have not been up to the mark this season. David Luiz has been sloppy since the restart and has made too many defensive errors in the last couple of months.
According to the Sun, Arteta’s side is now willing to sign one of the best defenders of La Liga as the club has prioritised the signing of Pau Torres from Villareal. The Spaniard is also one of the prime targets for Manchester United as the Red Devils to have also been in search of a solid centre-back to partner with Harry Maguire.
Torres was rock solid at the back for the Yellow Submarines last season as the 23-year-old made 34 appearances in La Liga scoring two goals and providing one assist. The pacy defender is one of the quickest players of the Spanish league and has built a good reputation for his firm presence at the rear end of the pitch.
Pau Torres also brings with him some exquisite aerial abilities and composure on the ball, which are two things that the current defenders apart from Gabriel are lacking. He promises to be the perfect signing for the club’s system, but competition from the Red Devils and Villarreal’s price tag may prove to be stumbling blocks.
Arsenal and Manchester United are expected to make a bid for the Spanish international in the upcoming winter transfer window as both clubs are looking to bolster their respective defences. However, the transfer will depend upon coach Unai Emery as his team is off to a brilliant start in the ongoing season and the coach might be reluctant in selling one of his best defenders.
