Arsenal has to face competition from Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain in order to sign their primary target this summer.
Arsenal finished 8th in the Premier League for the 2019-2020 season, meaning they missed out on the European competitions. However, unexpectedly the Gunners were able to lift the FA Cup with a triumph over Chelsea and will be competing in the Europa League this time around.
Also with the appointment of Mikel Arteta as head coach halfway through the last season, the London side has been improving with their performances, as seen in Community Shield finals against league winners Liverpool where the team played with great passion and deserved the win. However, the side is still a long way away from lifting a European trophy or even the Premier League for that matter.
The squad is in a major need of a revamp, the defense being the main weak link of the team. Arsenal have been letting in goals due to defensive errors and even losing out on precious points due to these silly mistakes, a clear example was seen in the match against Watford last season which ended 2-2.
Arteta will be looking to sign more defensive-minded players and even put up a few players on the transfer market to acquire funds for such transfers. According to reports, the English side has been in the race to sign Atletico Madrid’s defensive midfielder Thomas Partey.
The Ghanaian has attracted a fair share of suitors, with Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain already looking to sign him. The 27-year-old is currently on a contract where his release clause is priced at 50 million euros, and though it might not be considered very expensive by recent standards, it is a price unaffordable by most clubs due to the financial situations of the coronavirus pandemic.
Antonia Conte has been looking long and hard for a player that can run his midfield at Inter, the preferred choice being his former player N’Golo Kante. However, Chelsea’s lofty price tag coupled with the player’s salary has eventually brought the Italian manager’s eyes to the Spanish side.
50 million is a price tag too high for the Nerazzurri and Conte is willing to lower the price by offering Ivan Perisic as part of the deal. Though the Croatian is a world-class player, it is unlikely that Diego Simeone would require his services on the left-flank as he has recently already signed Yannick Carrasco on a permanent basis to fulfil that role.
As for the Parisiens, the departure of Thiago Silva is sure to leave a gap in defense, and Partey might be the perfect addition to the midfield that would help take off the pressure from the backline. The club does have a few good central defenders to replace the Brazilian, but a defensive midfielder will obviously help the cause as an upgrade to the existing Idrissa Gana-Gueye.
Though there is interest from the French capital for signing the player, Arsenal and Inter still are the leading horses in the race to sign him.
Mikel Arteta has offered a sum of money plus Matteo Guendouzi for the talented midfielder. Even though it is not a deal as lucrative as the one involving Perisic, Los Colcherones might look into it as the center of the park is the place they lack reinforcements in, and a player compensation plus cash might be a good deal.
