With Martin Odegaard‘s loan spell coming to an end in the summer, Arsenal are considering suitable options to replace him.
Martin Odegaard has been long touted as one of the most promising players in European football. Signed by Real Madrid in the summer of 2015, the 22-year-old has had loan two loan spells in the Netherlands and one in Spain, before he made his move to England in January this year.
Arsenal had acquired the services of Odegaard on a loan deal which will expire after the conclusion of the current season. With Zinedine Zidane building a team for the future at Real Madrid, he is expected to be a part of the Frenchman’s plans. The Gunners do not have an option to extend his stay at Emirates and as a result, they have started considering various alternatives.
Nabil Fekir who has been often linked with a move to Premier League is on Arsenal’s radar as reported by Goal. The Frenchman was linked with a move to Liverpool in 2018 but was eventually signed by Real Betis. Arsenal were interested in signing the attacking midfielder in the summer of 2019, but the deal never went past the rumour stages.
Fekir has been a regular starter for Real Betis, scoring three goals and assisting another three goals in 30 appearances for the club so far this season. The Frenchman’s contract at the club expires in the summer of 2023 and as a result, Real Betis will be looking to make the most out of this deal. He has a release clause of 77 million pounds, however, that is something which both parties will avoid.
Betis will be looking at a sum of around 26 million pounds for the Frenchman who has switched his agents ahead of a potential move in the summer. Mikel Arteta, manager of Arsenal is not expected to be handed a huge transfer budget and will have to strengthen his squad with limited resources.
Although, Nabil Fekir has been a regular starter under Manuel Pellegrini at Betis, yet his return in terms of goals and assists is not as impressive. What Arsenal have lacked this season, is an attacking midfielder who can find the back of the net more often.
The club’s priority for the summer should be to extend Odegaard’s stay at the club, who has shown glimpses of the quality for which he is so highly rated. He was recently appointed as Norway’s captain ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022 Qualifiers and scored the equalizer in Arsenal’s derby win over their north London rivals, Spurs.
