Arsenal planning a coup over Barcelona to secure Portuguese prospect with a whopping 45 million euro release clause.
Portuguese outlet, A Bola, reports that the Premier League side have started negotiations with Sporting Lisbon to acquire star defender, Joelson Fernandes. The teenager, at a mere age of seventeen, has an incredibly valued release clause of 45 million euro with the Gunners prepared to pay it.
Such a large amount for an unknown youngster especially in the current market, which has been heavily affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, could potentially be a risky yet bold move for Arsenal.
The transfer, however, is not as easy as it seems with Barcelona also heavily invested in the youngster with Mundo Deportivo reporting that the club’s board are worried about Mikel Arteta winning the race to secure the teenager.
Fernandes shares a common agent with another Barca superstar, Philippe Coutinho, which could be beneficial for the Catalans when negotiating for his services against the Premier League giants who look to secure the talented winger.
At 17-years of age, Joelson has already managed 28 appearances with the Lisbon, scoring five goals during those games. Barca already have a similar winger among their ranks in the form of Ansu Fati, who has had a tremendous debut season in Camp Nou this year.
There is no doubt that the Catalans are building a team for the future with their latest signings of Francisco Trincão, Pedri and Matheus Fernandes, while also promoting La Masia graduates like Riqui Puig, Ronald Araujo, and Fati. It remains to be seen whether Arsenal do manage to steal Barca’s targetted youngster as Arteta is looking to restructure his squad to compete alongside Premier League giants like Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea.
