Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta is planning to restructure his defensive lineup.
Arsenal are in need of a major restructuring project in order to compete in the Premier League against current leaders Liverpool and Manchester City, and also strong contenders like Chelsea and Manchester United.
One such area where the Gunners need to bring reinforcements is their defensive lineup with the former Manchester City assistant coach prepared to axe certain players in order to bring the necessary changes.
Arteta has identified Sokratis Papastathopoulos as the man to be replaced, with the Greek international still unwilling to leave the Emirates Stadium amid feeling confident about securing the role.
Despite playing only one minute since the restart, the defender believes that he could still be part of the club’s future plans and is looking to see through his current contract which expires in 2021. At 32 years of age, Sokratis will not be considered in the Spaniard’s plans for this team and will only consider his inclusion if he faces a drought of defenders due to injuries.
Meanwhile, the player himself is convinced he can convince his coach to place faith in his abilities for the next season. But unfortunately, six defenders have already secured a spot ahead of the Greek man with Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Tierney both being promised minutes on the left-flank, a position preferred by Papastathopoulos.
A groin problem could be the reason why the coach has been reluctant on choosing the once regular starter, with Shkodran Mustafi being the chosen one. Sokratis’ ball-playing skills are said to be affected by his injury and that is whats keeping Arteta from trusting the defender.
The Premier League side are also looking to secure a new defender in the next transfer window with Malang Sarr being named as the perfect signing as he will be a free transfer after his contract with the French side, Nice, expired last month.
Sokratis’ future depends on the sales and signings Arteta makes in the next transfer window with the 32-year-old hoping that the club does not receive a profitable offer for his transfer as he wishes to play another season with the Gunners.
