4 talking points as Liverpool dominated and outclassed Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League as the Reds scored 5 past the Italians

Liverpool went to Bergamo to face arguably the toughest opponents in free-scoring Atalanta and made light work of them. The Reds put Gasperini’s team to the sword in a ruthless display of counterattacking football of the highest order. Goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and a hattrick from Diogo Jota saw the Merseyside club put five past the Serie A. Here are four talking points from the fixture.

NO VIRGIL VAN DIJK NO PROBLEM FOR LIVERPOOL

There were a lot of questions raised when Virgil was ruled out of the season on whether Liverpool could cope up with his absence. It has been so far so good for Liverpool with five wins out of five and only two goals conceded. Joe Gomez has emerged as a leader in these adverse circumstances and has to lead the backline with young Rhys Williams and Nat Phillip. Alisson’s return was a timely boost for Liverpool as he made crucial saves which turned out to be game-changers.

Klopp rested  Roberto Firmino and decided to play pacy Jota who would be more effective in counter-attacks and that paid rich dividends as Jota’s inclusion proved to be the difference in the match. Jota’s direct running caused problems to Atalanta backline who could not cope with him all match. Jota’s excellent performance earned him the match ball and might have earned him the start against City too
