Real Madrid defeated Athletic Bilbao on Sunday and face Villarreal next Saturday in their final match of the 2020/21 season.
Real Madrid secured a 1-0 win against Athletic Bilbao to drag La Liga’s title race until the final matchday, scheduled for the upcoming Saturday. While neither sides had any clear cut chances for large parts of the game, Nacho Fernandez scored a goal out of absolutely nothing as the Merengues got all three points on their final away visit of the campaign.
Los Blancos were top of the table after scoring the goal and there was hope that their fate would be in their own hands especially after Atletico Madrid went down to Osasuna. However, Diego Simeone’s men took control in the final few minutes and struck twice to remain on top and needing just three points to win the title.
Here is a look at the three talking points from the Real Madrid clash.
REAL MADRID LACKED CREATIVITY FOR MOST OF THE MATCH
Real Madrid were far from their best, but they got a result by scoring a goal out of nowhere. Zinedine Zidane’s charges did not create many goal-scoring opportunities and were not threatful despite having a larger share of possession. The frontline, including Karim Benzema, had an off day and did not cause much trouble to the opposition.
Luka Modric and Rodrygo tried to cause havoc down the right, but most of their crosses reached an empty box. Moreover, the Brazilian struggled physically and was unable to display a good chemistry with Alvaro Odriozola who came forward from right-back often. All in all, it was a dormant display by Real, but they still remain in the title race.
