Real Madrid beat Celta Vigo 2-0 in La Liga to move to the top of La Liga’s standings, at least until Atletico Madrid play on Sunday.
Real Madrid got 2021 off to the perfect start as they clinched a comfortable 2-0 success over Celta Vigo. Both sides came into the match at the back of seven unbeaten fixtures in all competitions, but Zinedine Zidane saw his side prevail, courtesy of Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio, who bagged a goal apiece on either side of the interval.
Thibaut Courtois had little to do as the Whites were defensively very rigid despite Sergio Ramos being ruled out due to illness. Nacho Fernandez and Raphael Varane especially did a terrific job at the back together but the plaudits certainly belong to Asensio and Vazquez, who scored and teed up one another to cap off brilliant individual displays.
Here is a look at the talking points from the fixture.
REAL MADRID MADE LIFE DIFFICULT FOR CELTA VIGO FROM THE FIRST WHISTLE
Celta Vigo came into the match on a great run of form but they looked like a proper mid-table side as Real Madrid nullified them right from kick-off. The Galicians were pressed into making mistakes with even Toni Kroos, a relatively slow player running higher up the pitch to force mistakes. The second and decisive goal came as a result of the same.
The visitors never really had any significant chances besides one in the sixth minute, which Nacho cleared off the line. The Spaniard’s intervention led to a counterattack which put the Whites on their way to a crucial win in next to no time. Madrid were superb in the offensive transitions and as is always the case, could have scored a few more.
