Real Madrid beat Cadiz with relative ease to continue fighting for their La Liga crown, despite a significant number of absentees.
Real Madrid secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Cadiz on Wednesday to move to the top of La Liga, at least until Atletico Madrid play next. A riot towards the end of the first half was enough to see the Whites across the line. Karim Benzema scored twice and assisted Alvaro Odriozola as well, for the Spaniard’s first goal in the top-flight.
Cadiz were always second best in the game and were unable to create any significant chances as Real Madrid kept a third clean sheet in a row as well. Antonio Blanco made his first start in the league for Los Blancos, whereas Miguel Gutierrez also came off the bench in his first team debut for the defending Spanish champions.
Here is a look at the three talking points from the clash.
REAL MADRID BEGIN FLEXING THEIR DEFENSIVE MUSCLE
One of the most important factors that helped Real Madrid knit a winning run towards the end of last season was their rock-solid defence. Towards the end of this campaign, Los Merengues are hoping to produce similar performances as they must win all their matches until the campaign ends and also rely on other results to defend the championship.
Eder Militao and Nacho Fernandez have been absolutely brilliant at the back in the absence of Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos, whereas Courtois has also been in an incredible run of form since the turn of the calendar. In Cadiz, the duo stepped up once again in a three-man defence with Varane, who has now returned from illness, and gave the hosts a tough time.
