3 talking points as Real Madrid drop points at Real Sociedad

Real Madrid could pick up just one point against Real Sociedad after dominating the possession but not getting the goals.

Real Madrid began their title defence with just one point in their opening La Liga fixture after a 0-0 draw against Real Sociedad. The Whites were good in the opening half and had total control of the match but they failed to convert possession into goals. Zinedine Zidane’s men probed till the end but were forced to share the spoils at the Reale Arena.

Martin Odegaard was handed a first La Liga start for the Merengues after several loan spells and it was also his first appearance in Spain’s top-flight for the Whites since 2015. Youth players Marvin Park and Sergio Arribas also came off the bench to make their official debuts for the side but there just seemed to be a lack of inspiration in the final third.

Here’s a look at the five talking points from the fixture:

ZINEDINE ZIDANE’S TACTICAL FAILURE HARMS REAL MADRID

Zinedine Zidane went with a starting eleven that had no defensive midfielder and played Odegaard as the attacking midfielder. Los Blancos, therefore, missed out on transitioning the ball to the fullbacks with Dani Carvajal’s attacking involvement being lesser than it usually is. The Frenchman’s substitutions in the second half were pathetic as well.

Federico Valverde and Casemiro coming on made sense since the defending champions had control of the midfield since then, but one would fail to understand why Marvin was handed his opening minutes in a stalemate situation and in a fixture as difficult as this. The same would in fact imply for Sergio Arribas as well. No striker was brought on when goals were needed.
