3 talking points as Paris Saint-Germain triumph over Bayern Munich on away goals

Paris Saint-Germain have sealed a spot in the UEFA Champions League semi-final after defeating Bayern Munich on away goals.

Paris Saint-Germain join Chelsea as the first two sides to book a berth in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. PSG, progressed onto the next round despite losing to Bayern Munich at home as the fixture ended 0-1. The Red and Blues progressed due to the away goal rule after scoring three against Bayern at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern were once again without their star forwards Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry as the duo also missed the first leg at Germany. Their absence was felt heavily for the Bavarians who squandered several chances in both the ties that could have sealed their qualification into the semi-final.

However, Paris Saint-Germain should also be applauded for their effort. Mauricio Pochettino played both the ties without his first-choice full-backs, lost Marquinho’s in the first leg to an injury and was without Marco Verratti and Mauro Icardi for both the fixtures.

Nevertheless, Les Parisiens gained revenge over Bayern Munich after losing the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League final. The Ligue 1 side now have an opportunity to once again reach the final of the competition, however, it would not be an easy task as they could potentially face Manchester City or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-final.Embed from Getty Images

ANOTHER NEYMAR MASTERCLASS FOR PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN

Neymar Jr once again ran the show for PSG in the UEFA Champions League. His efforts in the second leg against Bayern Munich earned him the man of the match award. The Brazilian was a constant threat to the visitors’ defence as he completed six dribbles and created five chances as well.

However, Neymar was awful in front of goal. The former Barcelona winger missed five goal-scoring opportunities against Bayern Munich and also made a few poor decisions while on the ball in the final third that could have further extended PSG’s lead. Nonetheless, it was an emphatic performance from the 29-year-old.

Another key player for Paris Saint-Germain last night was Angel Di Maria. The former Manchester United player was uncontainable down the wings and gave Alphonso Davies an unforgettable time with his dribbles. Di Maria got close to setting up Neymar for a goal, however, the Brazilian scuffed the chance from a yard out in front of the goal.
