3 talking points from Manchester City’s victory against Borussia Monchengladbach

Manchester City stormed into the quarterfinals of the Champions League as they outclassed Borussia Monchengladbach in the second leg.

Manchester City strolled into the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League after they defeated Borussia Monchengladbach in the last 16 clash on Tuesday. Going into the second leg with a 2-0 lead, the Citizens were on top of their game as they outclassed the German side, 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

It was a masterclass performance from Pep Guardiola’s men as they continue with their impressive performances. Kevin De Bruyne produced a goal from the top draw as he gave the hosts the lead in only the 12th minute. Ilkay Gundogan doubled the lead for City, after a tidy finish in the 18th minute. From there on, it was just a stroll in the park for City who defended well and registered another clean sheet.

Pep Guardiola has often been criticized for his team not doing well in Europe’s most elite competition. In the past four seasons, City have been knocked out of the quarterfinals on three occasions. Their best run in the Champions League, came in 2016 when they reached the semifinals, eventually losing to Real Madrid. However, it was Manuel Pellegrini who was in charge of the club during that period.

Last year, City lost to Lyon in the quarterfinals, despite defeating Real Madrid in the last 16. This year things do look a bit different. One of the most important things that Pep has fixed in his side is the defence. They did not concede a single goal in the 180 minutes they played against Gladbach in the last 16. In all fairness, Pep Guardiola’s success at the club this year will be measured by how far he can take his side in the Champions League.
