3 talking points as Manchester City defeat Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium

Manchester City handed Aston Villa a 2-0 defeat at home after Bernardo Silva and Ikay Gundogan found the back of the net for the Sky Blues.

The race for the Premier League title has been blown up after Manchester City defeated Aston Villa 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s side are currently placed second on the table, sharing equal points with Liverpool (38) with a game in hand. Another three points would see the Sky Blues progress on top of the table over their arch city rivals, Manchester United, by a single point lead.

However, the three points against Aston Villa did not come easy as it took 79 minutes for the hosts to break the deadlock through a late controversial goal from Bernardo Silva. Subsequently, Ikay Gundogan scored in stoppage time from the spot to seal City’s victory over Villa. It was a hard-fought win for the Sky Blues and also a controversial one. Let’s have a look at the talking points from the fixture.

Ruben Dias and John Stones have put together one of the best defensive partnerships of the season. The Portuguese and English centre-back have played 11 games this season in the Premier League out of which they have won 10 games resulting in 10 clean sheets. This record by itself speaks how impressive Ruben Dias and John Stones have been for Manchester City.

There was a moment of genius by Dias when a low cross was played into the box for Ollie Watkins to finish through on goal. However, the former Benfica defender got the slightest touch on the ball to deflect off the patch of the English striker. Had it not been for the touch from Ruben Dias, Ollie Watkins would certainly have buried that pass into the back of the net.

The 23-year-old centre-back finished the game against Aston Villa with a 100% successful tackling rate by completing both his attempted tackles. Dias also won four recoveries, three interceptions, and three aerial battles as well. Overall, the Portuguese defender was amongst the standout performers for City against Villa.
