Defending Champions Liverpool started 2021 on a disappointing note as they lost narrowly to Southampton to blow the title race open.
Liverpool started the new year the way they ended the last year. The Reds had another disappointing outing against Southampton where they lost out narrowly to a sublime Danny Ings goal inside the second minute. Rocked by the early goal Liverpool tried throughout the ninety minutes for an equalizer as Southampton held on to a famous win against the Reds.
Ralph Hasenhüttl was reduced to tears at full time following an incredible performance of persistence and determination. For Liverpool, it was yet another disappointing evening to add to their misery. They are now winless in three matches and their title charge looks out of sorts already. They have not scored in the last 250 minutes which has happened for the first time under Jurgen Klopp.

LIVERPOOL UNDERPERFORM YET AGAIN
Having ended 2019 with consecutive disappointing draws to West Brom and Newcastle, Liverpool would have been looking to kickstart the new year on a winning note. However, that was not the case. Jurgen Klopp’s side has already dropped points in eight of their 17 games to date.
At this same stage last season, they had dropped points just once. Not since May 2018 have Liverpool gone three league games without a win. The Reds have seen their rivals close in over the festive period and now both Manchester clubs can leapfrog them should they win their games in hand. Away form has been a major problem for the former Premier League champions and they have failed to win five of their last six fixtures on the road.
