Liverpool took another hit to their top-four hopes, as they dropped points against Leeds United, after conceding a late equalizer to the hosts.
Liverpool were on-course to securing all three points against Leeds United on Monday, before a later equalizer ensured parity at Elland Road. The score-line at the full-time whistle read 1-1, which meant that Liverpool’s chances of a top-four finish become more difficult.
Sadio Mane opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half, after a simple tap-in, to break his drought in front of goal. Leeds goalkeeper, Illan Meslier hesitated to collect the ball at the edge of the penalty area, as Trent Alexander-Arnold made the most of this opportunity and set up Mane for a easy finish.
Leeds United grew into the game in the second half, and earned a much-deserved equalizer from a corner. Llorente secured a point for Marcelo Biesla’s side after heading the ball into the back of net in the final stages of the game.
What are the three talking points as Leeds United salvaged a point against Liverpool?
LIVERPOOL MISS OUT ON CHANCE TO GET INTO TOP FOUR
Liverpool currently sit on the sixth place in the league, with 53 points from their 32 games. However, things could have been much better for Jurgen Klopp’s men, if they had secured all three points against Leeds United. The Reds could have climbed to the fourth spot in the league, at least momentarily, with their victory against Biesla’s side.
If Chelsea win their home game against Brighton on Tuesday, they will move four points clear of Liverpool, with just six remaining. The reigning league champions are yet to play Manchester United at Old Trafford as well, a ground on which they have already lost this season in the FA Cup. West Ham and Leicester City are a few other teams competing for a top four finish, with Tottenham Hotspur and Everton having an outside chance as well.
