Defending Champions Liverpool drop further points in the festive period with a goalless draw away to Newcastle United in the Premier League.
Liverpool endured another frustrating evening in Tyneside where they were left to rue missed chances to go five points clear at the top of the table. The Reds squandered four clear cut chances as Newcastle United keeper Karl Darlow was in inspired form to keep Liverpool at bay. Mohamed Salah had a chance to break the deadlock in the first half when his low shot was thwarted by Darlow.
Roberto Firmino was denied in first-half stoppage time with a brilliant save again. Salah had another similar chance in the second half where he completely missed the target. Newcastle had chances of their own to win the game but were denied by the brilliance of Alisson Becker. Liverpool brought on Thiago Alcantara to influence the proceedings it was to no avail as Newcastle held on for a crucial point.

LIVERPOOL DID NOT HAVE THEIR SHOOTING BOOTS ON AT ST JAMES’ PARK
Four huge chances, four big misses – that was the story of Liverpool’s slow-paced attack in the first 75 minutes. Rarely in Salah’s three-and-a-half years at Anfield can you lay the blame for dropped points at his door. Many may still remember the Egyptian missing a guilt-edge chance in the Merseyside derby back in 2019.
But other than that Salah has been a constant source of goals and, again, is Liverpool’s top scorer. The former Chelsea forward missed two big chances in the game first when he was denied by a Darlow hand and then he failed to even hit the target when sent clear by Firmino.
