Barcelona put in one of their best performances of the season on their way to a huge win over Real Sociedad in La Liga.
Barcelona took another massive step towards gunning down Atletico Madrid to the top of La Liga by thrashing Real Sociedad 6-1 at the Anoeta on Sunday evening. A commanding performance by the Blaugrana saw them move back to second in the league standings and remain the only unbeaten team in Europe’s top five leagues in 2021.
After an open half an hour, Ronald Koeman’s men took total control of the game. Antoine Griezmann and Sergino Dest put Barca two to the good before half-time. Post restart, the floodgates were well and truly opened as Ousmane Dembele scored a great solo goal while Lionel Messi and Sergino Dest treated themselves to a brace each. Ander Barrenetxea grabbed a goal for La Real.
Here is a look at the three talking points from another successful Barcelona outing.
MESSI CONTINUES TO BREAK RECORDS FOR BARCELONA
Lionel Messi had yet another memorable outing in the Azulgrana as he broke Xavi’s record of most appearances for the club. On his 768th match for the club, the Argentina international scored twice and assisted a goal as well in a comfortable win for Barca. Having said that, he also is now the top scorer in a single league worldwide, with 467 in La Liga.
Messi’s form in the New Year is surreal to say the least. In 12 league meetings this time around, he has struck 15 goals and assisted seven times whilst also scoring a goal in both Champions League matches against Paris Saint-Germain albeit in a losing cause. As a cherry on the cake, Joan Laporta may also be very close to offering him a new contract, deservedly.
