3 positions Manchester United need to rebuild during the summer transfer window

With an eye on the Premier League title next season, Manchester United will look forward to having a successful transfer window.

Manchester United enter the final weeks of the 2020-21 season, with an objective of cementing a place in the top 4 of the Premier League and finding the much-awaited glory in the Europa League. At a club where trophies are of utmost importance, the Red Devils have failed to lay their hands on any sort of silverware since the 2016/17 season when they won the Europa League.

Signs of improvement under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are certainly showing as the club finds itself in the second place in the Premier League, and are on course for a second successive top four finish, something which they have failed to do since Sir Alex Ferguson’s days at Old Trafford.

Like every season, the transfer window will be very crucial in Manchester United’s aspirations of winning titles next season. The Red Devils’ transfers have proved to be a scenario of hit or miss in the past few seasons. On one hand, the club signed Bruno Fernandes who has been Manchester United’s best signing since the Ferguson era, however, the club has made several poor signings, with players not fitting into the scheme of things at Old Trafford.

Donny Van de Beek has been confined to the bench for majority of the season, and a potential summer exit is on the cards and his scenario is just one among many.

Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles and Amad Diallo were the other acquisitions made last year. However, with Cavani entering his mid-30s, he is surely not a long term solution to United’s striking woes. Amad Diallo is surely a great prospect and showed his quality against AC Milan in the Europa League, but the Ivorian is still pretty raw and will take a few seasons to get accustomed to the Premier League.

In this case, Manchester United need quality reinforcements in their starting lineup, and not just players who will make up the numbers on the bench. Here’s a look at the three players the Red Devils could sign next summer:

Manchester United have had the French defender on their radar since the past few seasons. However, they are in with a real opportunity to land the Real Madrid defender at Old Trafford for the next season. Varane’s contract with the Merengues runs out in the summer of 2022, and there have been contrasting reports emerging from Spain regarding his willingness to extend his contract.

If the Frenchman does decide to embark on a new venture, Manchester United should consider a move for him. Victor Lindelof has done a decent job at Old Trafford so far this season, but the club are lacking sheer quality in the centre-back position in several aspects. Real Madrid will be looking at a fee of around 70 million euros for Varane who is a World Cup winner and has four Champions League titles in his trophy cabinet at the age of only 27.
