3 Barcelona players who must step up in Copa del Rey tie versus Sevilla

Three Barcelona players that could potentially turn out to be pivotal if the Catalans are to overturn the aggregate score against Sevilla.

Sevilla under Julen Lopetegui have transformed into one of Europe’s most exciting team’s. Their fluidity while attacking coupled with their rock-solid defence due to the likes of Jules Kounde and Diego Carlos have made them an unstoppable force. However, with the La Liga title out of their sight, the Spanish domestic cup seems to be their only shot at silverware after defeating Barcelona 2-0 in the first leg.

Since the victory at the Ramon-Sanchez Pizjuan, Sevilla have undergone a poor of form. They were handed a bitter defeat against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League which was then followed by another loss against the Catalans in the league. With Lopetegui’s side seeming shakier than ever, Ronald Koeman will have to capatilise on this opportunity to turn the Copa de Rey tie around.

The soon to be 34-year-old is basking in fine goal-scoring form: scoring five goals in his last five appearances in all competitions. Lionel Messi is currently the top goal-scorer in La Liga with 19 goals to his name and the Argentine forward seems hungrier than ever. One cannot deny that the Catalan skipper had a poor game in the first leg of the Copa del Rey tie, however, Leo Messi managed to avenge himself in the recent league clash scoring the second goal against Seville to seal an all-important 2-0 victory.

Ronald Koeman managed to utilise the 33-year-old in a very tactical manner in the 2-0 win over Sevilla in La Liga. The Dutch managed decided to play Messi in a free role through the centre which turned out to be a turning point for the Catalan’s in the second half. Koeman should reconsider using the free roam position once again for the Copa del Rey tie.
